Faculty Opinions Recommendation of The Effect of Autologous Activated Platelet-Rich Plasma (AA-PRP) Injection on Pattern Hair Loss: Clinical and Histomorphometric Evaluation

    Rachita Dhurat, Sukesh M.S
TLDR AA-PRP injections significantly promote hair growth but need better study design for clear efficacy.
The study by Cervelli et al. evaluated the effectiveness of autologous activated platelet-rich plasma (AA-PRP) injections on pattern hair loss using various assessment methods, including global photography, physician and patient assessments, standardized phototrichograms, histopathological assessments, and cell proliferation markers (Ki67 and CD34). The study demonstrated significant hair growth on global assessment, making it a notable contribution to the field. However, the study's design raised some concerns, such as the fixed PRP injection sites and the need for randomization across different scalp areas to establish efficacy clearly. Additionally, there were inconsistencies in the figures showing hair growth in control areas where only saline was injected.
