Ectopic Sebaceous Gland: A Developmental Anomaly

Jaime A. Tschen, Keith E. Schulze, Nor Chiao
TLDR A 21-year-old had a rare developmental anomaly with a misplaced sebaceous gland in a hair follicle.
In 2006, a case was reported involving a 21-year-old white male who had an ectopic sebaceous gland and duct within the bulb of an anagen hair follicle, which is a developmental anomaly. This finding was incidental and discovered during one of two biopsies from the patient's chin, which were conducted to investigate a persistent acneiform eruption around his mouth. The paper also reviewed the embryogenesis and development of sebaceous glands in human scalp hair follicles. According to the authors, this was the first reported instance of this particular developmental anomaly.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.
