TLDR Whale oil may safely and effectively promote hair growth.
The study investigated the potential of whale oil in promoting hair growth using a C57BL/6 mice model. Female mice were treated with either a vehicle control, 3% minoxidil, or 20% whale oil. Results indicated that both 3% minoxidil and 20% whale oil were effective in enhancing hair growth, with whale oil showing superior results. Histological analysis revealed an increase in hair follicles and subcutaneous tissue thickness with whale oil treatment. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis suggested that whale oil may induce lower stress and inflammation responses compared to minoxidil, indicating its potential as a safe hair growth agent.
