TLDR Dexamethasone helps wound healing in septic mice but delays it in normal mice.
This study examined the effects of a single perioperative dose of dexamethasone (1 mg/kg) on wound healing in 260 mice under normal and septic conditions. The results indicated that dexamethasone delayed wound healing in normal mice by reducing granulation tissue and blood vessel formation. In contrast, it promoted healing in septic mice by enhancing these processes. The study established safe dosage ranges for dexamethasone, suggesting its impact on wound healing is context-dependent, with potential therapeutic benefits in septic conditions but possible adverse effects in non-septic conditions. The findings emphasize the importance of considering sepsis and dosing when using dexamethasone for wound healing.
