TLDR Keratinocytes grew and migrated into hair follicle areas but disappeared after 15-20 days.
In a 1992 study, researchers investigated the behavior of interfollicular epidermis keratinocytes in a collagen dermis framework during an autotransplantation experiment. The epidermis was detached and transferred to a collagen framework placed on a skin defect. The keratinocytes not only developed but also migrated into hair follicle bursas, forming follicular-like structures with characteristics of interfollicular epidermis. However, despite some retention of proliferative ability, the ingrowth of these cells disappeared by the 15th to 20th day post-transplantation.
