TLDR Researchers developed a quick and accurate method to measure hormones in urine, confirming a baldness treatment's effectiveness without altering hormone levels.
In 2019, researchers developed a method for simultaneously quantifying androgens and prostaglandins in human urine using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The method involved solid-phase and liquid–liquid extraction, enzyme hydrolysis, and chemical derivatization, allowing for separation and measurement of analytes within 22 minutes. The method was validated with high recoveries (81.0 to 102.9%), low limits of quantification (0.01 to 2 ng/mL), and good accuracy and precision. It was then applied to study the effects of a one-year finasteride treatment on male pattern baldness (MPB) patients compared to normal controls. The study found no significant difference in urinary androgen and prostaglandin levels between the two groups due to finasteride, confirming its effectiveness for MPB treatment. This mass spectrometry-based method also shows promise for evaluating androgens and prostaglandins in various inflammatory diseases.
