TLDR Dermoscopy can help diagnose oral lichen planus by identifying specific patterns.
This case report described the use of dermoscopy, specifically mucoscopy, to diagnose oral lichen planus in a young adult male. The patient exhibited asymptomatic white lacy lesions on the tongue, patchy hyperpigmentation of the buccal mucosa and gingivae, and longitudinal melanonychia on some nails. Mucoscopic examination revealed a tri-colored pattern with modified Wickham’s striae, red glossy erosions, and violaceous-to-brown clods, along with a vascular pattern of dotted and linear vessels. Onychoscopy confirmed lichen planus-associated melanonychia. The study highlighted the potential of dermoscopy in distinguishing oral lichen planus from other disorders with similar mucosal and nail pigmentation, marking the first report of using mucoscopy for this condition.
