TLDR Dermoscopy can help diagnose oral lichen planus by identifying specific patterns.
This case report described the dermoscopic features of oral lichen planus (OLP) in a 19-year-old man, highlighting the potential of mucoscopy as a diagnostic tool. The patient presented with asymptomatic white lacy lesions on the tongue, patchy hyperpigmentation of the buccal mucosa and gingivae, and longitudinal melanonychia on some nails. Mucoscopic examination revealed a tri-colored pattern with structureless veil-like grey-white areas, red glossy erosions, and violaceous-to-brown clods, along with a vascular pattern of dotted and linear vessels. These findings were distinct from the typical dermoscopic features of cutaneous lichen planus. The study suggested that these tri-colored patterns and vascular features could be characteristic of OLP, emphasizing the need for further exploration of mucoscopy in diagnosing mucosal disorders.
