TLDR Trichoscopy helps diagnose and track treatment for hair loss in men and women.
The study "Dermatoscopic Findings in Androgenetic Alopecia" involved 80 patients with Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), 50 males and 30 females. The researchers used trichoscopy, a non-invasive method that uses dermoscopy to capture images of the scalp and hair, to study the features of AGA. The most common trichoscopic feature found in all patients was Hairshaft thickness heterogeneity (HSTH). Other findings included the brown peripilar sign in 30 patients, white peripilar sign in 24 patients, pin point white dots in 20 patients, yellow dots in 2 patients, focal atrichia in 12 patients, and scalp honeycomb pigmentation in 15 patients. The study concluded that trichoscopy is a simple, non-invasive tool that aids in the diagnosis of AGA and allows for easy documentation, which can help in evaluating a therapeutic response by comparing pre and post-treatment images.

A 21-year-old with a family history of early balding is advised to see a dermatologist to confirm androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and consider treatments like finasteride or dutasteride to prevent further hair loss, and minoxidil, possibly with tretinoin, to regrow hair. Caution is advised with oral minoxidil, and a cardiologist should be consulted before use.

A user in France is frustrated because three dermatologists refused to prescribe finasteride for their hair loss, suggesting it's not androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and offering expensive vitamin treatments instead. Other users suggest buying hair loss treatments like minoxidil and finasteride from various online pharmacies and considering a gender-affirming care physician for more understanding treatment options.

The user noticed small circular hairless spots after a buzz cut and has been using finasteride, dutasteride, and oral minoxidil for hair loss. They are experiencing continuous shedding and thinning, and it is suggested they consult a dermatologist for a scalp examination and possible biopsy to determine if it's alopecia areata or androgenetic alopecia.
