TLDR Both azathioprine and betamethasone treatments help with hair regrowth in alopecia areata, but azathioprine may have fewer side effects.
The document presents findings from a study comparing the effectiveness of weekly azathioprine pulse (WAP) and betamethasone oral mini pulse (BOMP) in treating moderate to severe alopecia areata (AA). Fifty patients were randomized to receive either azathioprine (300 mg once weekly) or betamethasone (5 mg on 2 consecutive days) orally for 4 months, with a 3-month follow-up. Results showed that both treatments were equally effective, with significant hair regrowth and reduction in hair loss area. Group 1 (azathioprine) had a median percentage hair regrowth of 44.52 (0-75.43), and group 2 (betamethasone) had 71.43 (11.11-100). However, 16 patients in the BOMP group experienced corticosteroid-induced side effects, while only 7 patients in the WAP group had transient nausea. One patient in each group relapsed. The study concluded that WAP is a potentially effective and safer alternative to BOMP for treating AA, but further studies are needed to confirm these results.
