TLDR The VSCAPSI is a helpful method for evaluating the severity of scalp psoriasis.
Between November 2009 and June 2010, researchers developed the Videodermoscopy Scalp Psoriasis Severity Index (VSCAPSI) to evaluate scalp psoriasis severity, focusing on mild and moderate cases. The index assesses the affected scalp area, vascular patterns, erythema, and desquamation. Out of 900 participants with scalp and hair disorders, 85 were diagnosed with scalp psoriasis. To validate the VSCAPSI, 146 dermatologists evaluated videodermoscopy images of scalp psoriasis. The findings indicated high recognition rates for vascular patterns (88.2%), desquamation (85.1%), and erythema (69.7%). The study concluded that VSCAPSI is a valuable tool for early diagnosis, differential diagnosis, follow-up, and screening for scalp psoriasis, which can help in preventing psoriatic arthritis and is useful for clinical trials assessing treatment responses. Videodermoscopy is highlighted as a cost-effective, non-invasive method, though it can be complex and time-consuming. No financial support or conflicts of interest were reported in the study.
