TLDR Hormonal imbalances in women can cause acne, excess hair growth, and hair loss, needing combined medical and mental health care.
Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving androgens, significantly impact dermatological conditions such as acne, hirsutism, and alopecia. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, characterized by androgen excess and insulin resistance, exacerbate these skin issues. Hormonal acne, often found in the lower facial region, can be treated with hormonal contraceptives, antiandrogens, or isotretinoin. Hirsutism is assessed with scoring systems and managed with hormonal and cosmetic treatments. Hormonal hair loss, including female pattern thinning and telogen effluvium, is linked to estrogen withdrawal or thyroid issues, requiring trichoscopy and hormonal profiling for diagnosis. A multidisciplinary approach involving dermatological, gynecological, and endocrine care, along with mental health support, is crucial for improving outcomes.
