TLDR Demodex folliculitis can occur in HIV patients on HAART, and treatment may involve topical creams or medication changes.
The document described two cases of demodex folliculitis in HIV-infected patients following the initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Both patients experienced pruritic skin eruptions due to demodex mites, which are common in the general population but can cause issues in immunocompromised individuals. The first patient responded well to topical metronidazole cream, while the second required a change in antiretroviral regimen to safely use ivermectin, which resolved the symptoms. The study suggested that immune reconstitution from HAART might exacerbate demodex infestations, leading to symptoms. It highlighted the importance of considering demodex folliculitis in the differential diagnosis of skin eruptions in HIV patients on HAART.
