TLDR Cysteine formation on hair indicates damage, best detected at pH 4.5.
The study analyzed the impact of physical and chemical factors on cysteine components in human hair keratin, which can lead to the rupture of disulfide bonds and the formation of cysteine with a mercapto group. This formation was used as an index to assess hair damage. The researchers used a fluorescence probe, NBD-Cl, to study cysteine formation on hair fibers through a spectrofluorescence method. NBD-Cl interacted with mercapto and amino groups in cysteine, forming fluorescence complexes on hair surfaces. The optimal reaction conditions were determined, with the highest fluorescence emission observed at pH 4.5.
