TLDR Obesity significantly affects skin health, causing conditions like acanthosis nigricans and skin tags, and should be considered during skin exams.
The study, which included 200 patients with a BMI over 30 kg/m², found a high prevalence of dermatological conditions associated with obesity. Acanthosis nigricans was the most common condition, affecting 83.50% of the participants, followed by skin tags (72.00%), stretch marks (70.50%), and dermatophytosis (36.00%). Additionally, 30.50% of patients experienced patterned hair loss. Comorbidities such as hyperinsulinaemia (89.50%), diabetes (25.00%), hypertension (21.00%), and hypothyroidism (12.50%) were also observed. The study concluded that obesity has a significant impact on the skin and recommended that BMI, waist, and hip measurements be included in dermatological examinations.
