Cutaneous Manifestations in Pregnancy

    TLDR Pregnant women often experience a variety of skin problems, including pigmentation changes and stretch marks.
    In 2018, Dr. Mahendra, Dr. Bharathi Peta, and Prof. Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi conducted a cross-sectional study on 200 pregnant women to determine the pattern of skin changes associated with pregnancy. The study found that all participants experienced physiological changes, 80 had other dermatoses affected by pregnancy, and 20 had specific dermatoses. The most common physiological changes were pigmentary alteration (92%) and striae (86%). The most common specific dermatoses were Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (13 cases) and Pruritus gravidarum (6 cases). The most common dermatoses affected by pregnancy were Vulvovaginal candidiasis (30 cases), acne vulgaris (20 cases), and eczemas (10 cases). The study concluded that pregnant women are prone to a wide range of dermatological problems, emphasizing the need for detailed examination of these patients.
