TLDR Patients on hemodialysis commonly have skin color changes, nail problems, dry skin, and itching.
In a study conducted from August 2018 to January 2019, 80 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis were examined for cutaneous manifestations. The study found that the most common skin symptoms in these patients were pigmentation (82.5%), nail changes (75%), xerosis (dry skin, 70%), and pruritis (itching, 50%). The most common cause of end stage kidney disease in these patients was diabetic nephropathy. The study concluded that patients on hemodialysis often experience multiple skin symptoms, with pigmentation and nail disorders being the most prevalent. Early diagnosis of these issues was identified as a key step in improving the patients' quality of life.
