TLDR Cutaneous lupus erythematosus is a common skin condition in lupus, affecting mostly young adult females.
Lupus erythematosus (LE) was a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease with a range of symptoms from cutaneous to systemic involvement. Approximately 75% of individuals with LE experienced cutaneous symptoms, making cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) a significant focus in dermatological research. The prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was 17-48 per 100,000 worldwide, and while CLE was once thought to be 2-3 times more common than SLE, newer evidence suggested similar incidence rates. LE typically affected individuals aged 20-40, with a higher prevalence in females and slightly increased susceptibility in those of African ancestry.
