TLDR Most patients treated with low-dose alpha-interferon for malignant melanoma experienced skin side effects, with hair loss being the most frequent.
In a study of 33 patients with stage IIA and IIB malignant melanoma treated with low-dose alpha-interferon, 87% experienced cutaneous side effects, with hair loss being the most common, affecting 48.4% of patients. Other side effects included eczematous reactions, pruritus, and various skin conditions, but these did not lead to treatment discontinuation. The study also noted that while pruritus and inflammatory lesions were common, only 2 patients had hypersensitivity reactions, and the side effects generally required only supportive care without needing to stop the treatment.
