TLDR A method was developed to grow hair follicles in a lab for research on hair growth and health.
The study from 1988 focused on developing a culture system for hair follicles to facilitate research on cellular differentiation, gene expression, and the effects of various factors on hair growth. The researchers aimed to maintain hair follicles as three-dimensional structures using a collagen matrix, which allowed for prolonged analysis. This system was intended to enable the transfection of hair cells with keratin genes and to study the impact of nutritional factors, hormones, drugs, and carcinogens on hair growth and epithelial neoplasms. The success of the culture system was measured by the continued synthesis of hair-specific proteins.
