TLDR Corin helps control salt and sweat release in sweat glands.
The study identified the protease corin as a key regulator of electrolyte homeostasis in eccrine sweat glands. Corin was found to activate atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), essential for normal blood volume and pressure, and was expressed in luminal epithelial cells of both human and mouse eccrine sweat glands. Corin-deficient mice exhibited reduced sweat and salt excretion due to increased epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) activity, which was normalized by the ENaC inhibitor amiloride. The study suggested that corin antagonizes aldosterone, promoting sweat and salt excretion by inhibiting ENaC activity, and provided new insights into the physiological regulation of skin function.
