TLDR Realistic expectations about hair density and coverage lead to higher patient satisfaction in hair transplant surgery.
The 2009 paper discussed the challenges of managing patient expectations in hair transplant surgery. It emphasized that each patient's outcome varies based on the characteristics of their donor and recipient areas. To manage expectations, particularly regarding hair density, the authors suggested educating patients about hair density, follicular units, baldness progression, and the balance between donor and recipient areas. They used 3D animations and microscopic scalp analysis to illustrate these concepts. They also gauged patient expectations by showing them varying results of previous surgeries. The authors identified certain warning signs of potentially difficult patients, such as those who never smile or make eye contact, and those who lack knowledge about hair restoration surgery. These patients often had higher expectations and were harder to manage during and after the procedure. The authors concluded that keeping patient expectations realistic, particularly regarding coverage, increased the likelihood of patient satisfaction. They also noted that the best surgical results did not always correlate with the most satisfied patients.
