Congenital and Hereditary Skin Diseases
January 2018
TLDR Goats can have various genetic skin diseases affecting hair, skin, and thyroid function.
The chapter reviewed various congenital and hereditary skin diseases in goats, focusing on conditions like aplasia cutis, hypotrichosis, ichthyosis, congenital goiter, hypothyroidism, and epidermolysis bullosa. Aplasia cutis was described as an autosomal recessive trait leading to ulcers due to embryonic epidermal differentiation failure. Hypotrichosis involved reduced hair and hair follicle hypoplasia. Ichthyosis encompassed disorders of keratinization. Congenital goiter and hypothyroidism were linked to iodine deficiency and defective thyroglobulin synthesis, particularly in Saanen-Dwarf Crossbreds. Epidermolysis bullosa, including dystrophic types, caused vesicles and bullae after minor trauma, noted in Anglonubian goats.
