TLDR Androgenetic alopecia treatments slightly increase the risk of side effects, especially sexual dysfunction and skin reactions.
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated complications and adverse events associated with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) treatments lasting 3 months or more, analyzing data from 6 studies with 5,725 participants. The study found that AGA treatments are linked to a small increased risk of adverse events, with dutasteride showing the highest risk (OR 2.10). Finasteride and minoxidil also showed increased risks (OR 1.87 and OR 1.35, respectively). The main adverse events identified were sexual dysfunction for finasteride and dutasteride, and local dermatologic reactions for minoxidil. The study recommends clinical monitoring and informed discussions with patients about these risks.

There is debate over starting with finasteride versus dutasteride, with some users advocating for dutasteride due to its potency, while others caution about potential side effects.

community Why is everyone not directly advised Dutasteride?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  169 upvotes 1 year ago
Dutasteride is less commonly prescribed for hair loss because it is not FDA-approved for this purpose, unlike finasteride, which is more accessible and preferred due to fewer side effects. Dutasteride may be more effective in reducing DHT but has a longer half-life and potentially more significant side effects.
