TLDR Platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapies are accepted treatments for hair restoration, with specific protocols recommended for best results, but more standardization is needed in stem cell use.
The commentary from 2020 discussed the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy for hair restoration. Initially, these treatments were considered questionable, but controlled clinical studies and basic research have led to their acceptance as treatment protocols. The paper highlighted the importance of creating PRP preparations with 3 to 5 times the normal platelet concentration and suggested at least 3 sessions a month apart with follow-up sessions at a later date. It was noted that there is relapse after PRP injections in treatments that extend beyond 12 months, supporting the use of follow-up injections. The commentary also discussed the potential of stem cells in hair restoration, but noted that the data did not provide the same level of evidence as for PRP due to lack of standardization in stem cell harvesting and application. The authors recommended a specific treatment protocol for PRP with 3 monthly injections followed by a fourth within at least 6 months after the initial series, as well as maintenance injections at 12 to 18 months.
