TLDR Dutasteride is slightly better than finasteride for treating BPH but has fewer sexual side effects.
This randomized clinical trial involving 165 patients compared the effects of combination therapy with tamsulosin and either dutasteride or finasteride for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Over a 6-month period, various parameters such as International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), post-void residual urine (PVR), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), prostate volume (PV), prostate specific antigen (PSA), and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) were assessed. The study found that dutasteride, particularly at a dose of 0.5mg, was more effective than finasteride in increasing Qmax and reducing PSA levels. However, finasteride was associated with more severe sexual side effects. Overall, dutasteride may be slightly more advantageous as part of combination therapy for BPH.
