TLDR Coconut leaf vermiwash improves soil health and crop yields in organic farming.
The study demonstrated that coconut leaf vermiwash, produced from vermicomposting coconut leaves and cow dung, significantly improved soil health and crop yields. Laboratory bioassays and field trials showed increased germination, seedling vigor, biomass, and yield in crops like cowpea, maize, and bhendi. Specifically, cowpea biomass increased by 36%, maize cob yield by 5-10%, and bhendi yield by 22-33% with vermiwash application. Field trials in farmers' plots confirmed these results, with additional benefits such as healthier plants, reduced pest damage, and improved soil microbial activity. Although yields were on par or slightly lower than traditional fertilizers, the overall soil fertility and plant health were enhanced, indicating vermiwash as a viable component of organic farming.
