TLDR Alopecia areata severity in children is linked to atopy history, disease duration, and nail involvement, but not anemia.
This study investigated the clinical and demographic characteristics of 131 pediatric patients with alopecia areata (AA) at Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Training and Research Hospital from 2010 to 2013. The patients, aged 2-16 years, included 74 males and 57 females, with a mean age of 8.95 years. The study found that 21.4% of the patients had a history of atopy, which was highly correlated with the severity of AA. The severity of AA was also associated with the duration of the disease and nail involvement, but not with anemia, which was present in 20.5% of the patients. The lesions in these children were generally less extensive, covering less than 25% of the scalp.
