TLDR Alopecia areata severity in children is linked to atopy history, disease duration, and nail involvement, but not anemia.
This study analyzed 131 pediatric patients with alopecia areata (AA) at Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Training and Research Hospital from 2010 to 2013. The patients, aged 2-16 years, included 56.5% males and 43.5% females, with a mean age of 8.95 years. The study found that 21.4% of patients had a history of atopy, which was highly correlated with the severity of AA. The severity of AA was also associated with the duration of the disease and nail involvement. However, anemia, detected in 20.5% of patients, was not related to the severity of AA. The lesions in these children were generally less than 25% extensive.
