TLDR Chemotherapy can cause permanent hair loss.
This study investigated the clinical characteristics of chemotherapy-induced permanent alopecia (CIPAL) in 54 patients diagnosed between January 1996 and December 2011. The mean age of onset was 31.5 years, with no gender predominance. CIPAL presented in two morphological types: diffused (69%) and androgenetic patterned (31%). Cyclophosphamide was the most commonly used chemotherapy agent associated with CIPAL. Treatment responses to topical minoxidil and/or oral finasteride were limited. The study concluded that hair regrowth after chemotherapy can be restricted, and it is important to consider the possibility of permanent alopecia following chemotherapy.
