TLDR Oral minoxidil effectively reduces hair shedding in women with chronic telogen effluvium.
This retrospective study at Sinclair Dermatology in Melbourne examined the effects of low-dose oral minoxidil on 36 women with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE). Over 12 months, the treatment significantly improved hair shedding scores (HSS), with mean scores decreasing from 5.64 to 3.05. Improvement was observed in 33 out of 36 patients. Side effects included facial hypertrichosis in 14 women and transient postural dizziness in 2 patients, but no significant blood pressure changes were noted. The study concluded that oral minoxidil could be an effective alternative to topical minoxidil for treating CTE.
