November 1999
in “Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology”
TLDR Minoxidil increases hair weight and count temporarily in men with hair loss.
The study found that 5% and 2% topical minoxidil are effective treatments for androgenetic alopecia in men, increasing hair weight and count significantly compared to placebo and no treatment. The effects were temporary and returned to placebo levels after stopping. Total hair weight is recommended as the primary estimator for hair growth. The study involved 36 to 393 men and lasted for 96 to 120 weeks. Minoxidil is an effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia in men, but it does not change the underlying genetic predisposition for the condition.
