TLDR CD44 variant changes start alopecia areata, but don't maintain it.
The study investigated the role of CD44 variant isoforms and CD4+/CD25+ regulatory T cells in C3H/HeJ mice with alopecia areata (AA). It found that CD44 variant isoforms were crucial for leukocyte migration during the initial phase of AA, with significant upregulation of CD44 variants 3, 6, 7, and 10 after grafting AA-affected skin onto normal-haired mice. In chronic AA, there was high cytokine expression and a reduction in CD4+/CD25+ regulatory T cells, supporting the idea of AA as an autoimmune disease. The study involved 40 female mice and concluded that changes in CD44 expression were significant for the initiation of AA, but not for maintaining the disease.
