Determining the Causes of Reproductive Disorders in Nutrias
TLDR Poor-quality feed and low vitamin A cause reproductive issues in nutrias.
The study on nutria reproductive disorders identified nutritional deficiencies, particularly poor-quality feed and inadequate rations, as the primary cause of impaired reproductive function. These deficiencies result in decreased carotene (provitamin A) levels, causing hypovitaminosis A, which manifests as growth retardation, dull hair, skin issues, and alopecia. Infertility was noted in females not reproducing within 3 months of being with a male. A seasonal pattern of vitamin A deficiency was observed, peaking in February-March, with levels more than 2.5 times lower than in August-September, leading to fetoplacental insufficiency and related reproductive issues.
