TLDR Calprotectin levels are higher in alopecia areata patients, indicating systemic inflammation.
This study investigated the serum levels of calprotectin (CLP) in 30 patients with alopecia areata (AA) compared to 30 matched controls, finding significantly higher CLP levels in AA patients (p < 0.0001). The study revealed significant associations between CLP levels and various clinical characteristics of AA, including age, SALT score, disease duration, type, severity, and nail involvement. These findings suggest that AA is associated with systemic inflammation and that CLP could serve as a valuable inflammatory marker in AA patients.
