Treatment of Subacute and Chronic Discoid Lupus Erythematosus with Intensive Calcium Pantothenate Therapy

    Leon Goldman
TLDR Calcium pantothenate therapy improved symptoms of discoid lupus erythematosus without side effects.
The study investigated the effects of intensive calcium pantothenate therapy on 14 patients with subacute and chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, particularly affecting the scalp. Patients received 400 mg of calcium pantothenate daily, with no additional therapies except a bland covering paste. The treatment showed improvement in the inflammatory phase of the disease, especially in subacute cases, and was well-tolerated without adverse reactions, unlike other treatments such as sodium paramino-benzoate. In some cases, therapy was paused to assess its impact, and calcium lactate was tested as a substitute without success. Only one patient developed new lesions during the treatment, and some required additional phenol cauterization.
