TLDR The optimal concentration for caffeine release in gel form is 0.2% caffeine and 2.3% chitosan.
The study from 10 years ago investigated the formulation of caffeine into dermal semisolid dosage forms, specifically hydrogels. Caffeine was chosen due to its protective, tranquilizing, lipolytic, and regenerative effects, which can be beneficial in sunbathing preparations and treatments for androgenic alopecia. The study aimed to understand the influence of different concentrations of chitosan and caffeine on the liberation of gels. The stability of the prepared samples was also evaluated through their rheological parameters. The results determined the optimal drug concentration to be caffeine 0.2% (w/w) and the gel forming substance to be chitosan 2.3% (w/w).

A user with aggressive male pattern baldness found that topical melatonin significantly reduced their hair shedding to 1 or 2 hairs per day and noticed some thickening of side hair. They tried many treatments like finasteride and minoxidil with little success, but topical melatonin showed immediate results in reducing hair loss.
