TLDR Low testosterone may increase COVID-19 severity in men.
This report explored the relationship between COVID-19 severity and androgen action, particularly in aging men. It highlighted that men might experience more severe COVID-19 outcomes than women, potentially due to androgen deficiency. The study reviewed the nongenomic mechanisms of androgens, which include inducing acute relaxing effects in airway and vascular tissues and providing anti-inflammatory and hypotensive responses. The findings suggested that low testosterone levels (hypotestosteronemia) could be a risk factor for increased COVID-19 severity, emphasizing the potential protective role of androgens against the disease.
