TLDR Human skin releases different steroids, with some coming from sebaceous glands and others from sweat glands.
The study conducted by I Tóth et al. in 1983 focused on the isolation and determination of seven free androgen steroids and four C19-steroid sulphates from the axillary hair of sexually mature healthy males and females. It was found that in 1 g of axillary hair, free steroids such as 4-androstene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol, testosterone, and others were present in nanomol amounts, while sulphate steroids like dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate were found in approximately 1000 times these amounts. The study suggested that free steroids in hair were products of sebaceous glands, whereas sulphate ester steroids were products of sweat glands.
