TLDR Bubble hair deformity may be caused by hair shaft trauma and can improve with gentle hair care.
The study examined an unusual hair dystrophy known as bubble hair using light and electron microscopy. Hair fibers showed a boomerang deformity with small and large bubbles, and electron microscopy revealed a loss of cortical cells and medulla at these sites. Cross-section images displayed either a single large cavity or a reticulated, "swiss cheese-like" loss of cells. These two cases were the second and third reported instances of bubble hair deformity, and the study included new electron microscopic findings. The cause of bubble hair deformity remained unclear, but the condition resolved with gentle hair care, suggesting that trauma to the hair shaft might be a factor. The study indicated that more cases of bubble hair likely remained unrecognized and recommended further investigation of patients with localized tufts of wiry hair.
