TLDR Improving oral hygiene and quitting smoking can resolve black hairy tongue.
This case report describes a 45-year-old male with black hairy tongue (BHT), a benign condition marked by hypertrophy of the filiform papillae and tongue discoloration. The patient, a long-term smoker and coffee/tea consumer, experienced halitosis and oral discomfort. Treatment included improved oral hygiene, non-hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, tongue scraping, and smoking cessation. After six weeks, the patient had complete resolution of tongue discoloration and improved halitosis, emphasizing the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors like smoking and caffeine intake in managing BHT.
