TLDR Goat skin has more keratin genes, while the mammary gland has more immunity-related genes.
This study analyzed Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) from goats, focusing on data up to September 2006. It found that 51 out of 392 ESTs from Cashmere goat skin with anagen hair follicles were genes coding for keratin or keratin-associated proteins. In contrast, no such ESTs were found in the goat mammary gland, which instead had genes coding for immunoglobulin, choline transporter-like protein, and MHC, with a focus on immunity and enzyme-related genes. The study highlighted that ribosome protein-coding genes were the most common analogical genes between the two tissues, with 15.1% from skin and 21.6% from the mammary gland. Notably, 17 out of 26 contigs from both tissues coded for ribosome proteins, accounting for 65.4%.
