TLDR Papular mucinosis can cause eyebrow hair loss, but treatment can lead to regrowth.
A 46-year-old woman presented with bilateral madarosis, characterized by the gradual loss of her eyebrows over 10 years, without other systemic symptoms. Examination revealed diffuse eyebrow hair loss, thickened facial skin, and yellowish papules on her face. Histopathology confirmed localized papular mucinosis. Treatment with oral isotretinoin and topical retinoic acid led to significant improvement, including regrowth of eyebrow hair and resolution of papules within three months. However, non-compliance with medication resulted in recurrence of eyebrow loss. This case highlighted that papular mucinosis, though rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of madarosis, and effective treatment can lead to hair regrowth.
