TLDR Chimp Haven uses a special system to check and improve the well-being of their chimpanzees, which could help other animal sanctuaries too.
The study at Chimp Haven focused on the behavioral welfare of over 300 sanctuary chimpanzees using various monitoring methods, including wellness surveys, wound tracking, and hair loss assessments. Data from 1456 surveys conducted by 24 observers over 18 months revealed an average wellness score of 1.52, indicating the need for regular quarterly monitoring. Key concerns included abnormal behaviors, coat condition, and wounding, with most wounds being minor. Interventions like additional foraging and positive reinforcement training were used to address issues such as hair loss and compliance with shifting behaviors. The study underscores the importance of continuous, data-driven monitoring and individualized care strategies to enhance the welfare of sanctuary chimpanzees.

The 2015 Hair Research Congress concluded that stem cells, maraviroc, and simvastatin could potentially treat Alopecia Areata, topical minoxidil, finasteride, and steroids could treat Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia, and PTGDR2 antagonists could also treat alopecia. They also found that low-level light therapy could help with hair loss, a robotic device could assist in hair extraction, and nutrition could aid hair growth. They suggested that Alopecia Areata is an inflammatory disorder, not a single disease, indicating a need for personalized treatments.
