TLDR Suriname uses many plants for beauty, with potential for a beauty industry, but more evidence is needed for product effectiveness.
The 2017 document detailed the use of over 300 plant species in Suriname for cosmetic and cosmeceutical purposes, with 72 (about 10%) used specifically for facial care and hair growth. The study found that traditional medicinal systems and plant use were deeply rooted in all ethnic groups in Suriname, despite the availability of affordable healthcare. The document highlighted the potential of Suriname's unique plant biodiversity and extensive ethnopharmacological knowledge for the development of a beauty products industry. Notably, the plant Tripogandra serrulata was used in hair growth promotion products. However, the document also emphasized the need for more scientific evidence to support the efficacy of these products.
