TLDR Baricitinib is effective and safe for treating severe alopecia areata with ongoing use.
A 104-week follow-up trial has demonstrated that baricitinib, a Janus kinase inhibitor, is effective and safe for treating severe alopecia areata. Continuous treatment is necessary to maintain hair regrowth and prevent the return of bald patches. The Dutch Society for Dermatology and Venereology (NVDV) has included baricitinib in their guidelines for severe alopecia areata treatment, and it is now reimbursed by Dutch health insurers for this condition.
