TLDR Bariatric surgery is safe and effective for treating adolescent obesity.
The study analyzed the outcomes of bariatric surgery in 64 adolescents with obesity, who underwent either sleeve gastrectomy (62 patients) or gastric bypass (2 patients) between 2013 and 2019. The mean age at operation was 15 years and 5 months, with a mean preoperative BMI of 39.45 kg/m², which decreased to 24.92 kg/m² at 12 months and 22.7 kg/m² at 36 months post-operation. There were no major perioperative complications, though one case of early transitory postoperative dysphagia was noted. Mild complications such as anemia, folate deficiency, constipation, and temporary hair loss were observed in the first postoperative year. The study concluded that bariatric surgery was safe and effective for treating adolescent obesity when performed in experienced centers.
