TLDR Backhousia citriodora leaf extract effectively reduces oily skin across different ethnic groups.
The document presents a study on the effectiveness of Backhousia citriodora leaf extract as a new active solution to control hyper-seborrhea across multiple ethnicities. Hyper-seborrhea is characterized by excessive sebum production, leading to oily and shiny skin. The study included in vitro tests and a clinical trial with 43 multi-ethnic volunteers over 28 days, applying a cream containing 2% of the extract twice daily. The in vitro results showed an 18% protection of squalene from oxidation and a 32% decrease in the protein expression of the sebocyte differentiation marker. Clinically, the extract significantly reduced skin sebum quantity by 7% across all ethnicities, with specific reductions in squalene and glycerid contents by 15% and 23% in Caucasians, 11% and 15% in Asians, and 46% and 44% in African-Americans, respectively. Additionally, the extract reduced the shiny effect of sebum on the skin by 1% in Caucasians, 3.4% in Asians, and 11% in African-Americans. The study concluded that Backhousia citriodora leaf extract effectively rebalances sebum quality and secretion by acting on oxidation, composition, and production, regardless of ethnicity, offering a new solution for oily and shiny skin.
