TLDR Mothers with atopic dermatitis have higher risks of pregnancy complications and their children are more likely to develop certain health issues.
This study investigated the relationship between maternal atopic dermatitis (AD) and adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes in Taiwan, using data from 15,495 mothers with AD and 77,475 mothers without AD, as well as their children. The findings revealed that mothers with AD had an increased risk of complications such as preterm labor, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction, with adjusted hazard ratios ranging from 1.09 to 1.71. Additionally, children of mothers with AD were at higher risk for conditions like AD, allergic rhinitis, asthma, alopecia areata, and ADHD, with hazard ratios from 1.05 to 2.29. The study concludes a significant association between maternal AD and adverse maternal and child outcomes in Taiwan.
