TLDR The new patch for treating mouth sores releases medicine slowly, sticks well, and helps healing without the side effects of current creams.
The study developed astaxanthin-loaded polycaprolactone/gelatin nanofiber-based mucoadhesive patches with a water-insoluble backing for treating oral premalignant lesions. These patches adhered well to the oral mucosa, ensuring a sustained release of astaxanthin, which effectively permeated the buccal mucosa. In vivo experiments on rats showed significant therapeutic efficacy by reducing Ki67 and COX-2 expression, comparable to clinical tretinoin cream, but without side effects like hair loss or oral ulcers. The results suggest that these patches hold great potential for OPL treatment.
