LB1682 Association of Inflammatory and Pigmentary Disorders with Alcohol Use Disorder and Psychiatric Illness
TLDR People with certain skin disorders are more likely to have alcohol problems, especially if they also have mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
The study investigated the relationship between psychiatric diseases (PD), skin diseases (SD), and alcohol use disorder (AUD) using data from the United States All of Us Research program, involving 65,676 patients with various SDs. Significant associations were found between AUD and several SDs, including atopic dermatitis (AD), acne/rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), psoriasis, and pigmentary disorders. When considering patients with both SD and PD, the association with AUD remained significant for AD, acne/rosacea, alopecia areata (AA), and psoriasis, but not for pigmentary disorders and HS. Mediation analysis revealed that PD significantly mediated the relationship between SD and AUD, accounting for 50-80% of the AUD risk, except for HS, where PD accounted for 31%. The findings suggest that SD is linked to higher odds of AUD, with anxiety and depression playing a substantial mediating role, underscoring the importance of screening for AUD in patients with SD.
