TLDR Female pattern hair loss greatly lowers quality of life, especially in young women.
The study "Assessment of quality of life in patients with female pattern hair loss in a tertiary care hospital in India" involved 66 female patients and found that female pattern hair loss (FPHL) significantly decreases the quality of life (QoL), especially in younger patients. The study used questionnaires (Hairdex, VAS, DLQI) to evaluate QoL and found that younger patients (≤30 years) were more affected in all Hairdex subscales, with higher scores indicating poorer QoL and more stigmatization than older patients (>30 years). The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores were highest in patients less than 20 years of age, and the mean DLQI score of younger subjects was significantly higher than older subjects (p<0.05). The study concluded that younger patients with FPHL are more stigmatized and have poorer functioning and emotional stability.
